Essentialism

After reading "Essentialism and Experience" and looking essentialism up I am still confused at its concept. To me it seems as if everything has properties that they must meet in order to have a purpose. This is so everything has a definition. It is then easier to describe things. Essentialism is a confusing topic to grasp however, to me it seems that essentialism is suppose to help makes sense of things. To give the topic order and definition so others can understand it. I still haven't grasped this concept but after researching it I have a little more understanding of it.

Nancy Sommers had a very good idea when she compared students writers and experienced writers. Both of these writers are from very different levels of writing and skill. One passage from her text really caught my attention."These studies are based on models that originated for oralcommunication and, since speech cannot be revised, a major part of the writing process is being left out." The speech cannot be revised really caught my attention because I agree with it. Speech is such a big part of writing, however you cant be revised on your speech. Only the paper you write can be revised. But the way you talk and think is a huge part of how your paper is written. Your voice is heard through your writing. When your paper is being revised the editor only sees what you have written down, not what went through your head when you were writing it. There are so many different ways you can revise a paper but to really understand and edit the paper I believe you need to get inside the writers head and understand the voice they are trying to portray.
